Declare Your Independence- from Debt

One of the major goals of Your Money and Debt is to get you to take control of your finances, and in so doing, your life. And that is certainly not going to happen if you are neck-deep in credit card debt, mortgages, student loans, etc. Nor is it going to happen if you consistently spend more than you earn. Especially in these tough economic times, it is not just a good idea, but absolutely essential, that you not rely on just your weekly (or monthly) paycheck to make it from month to month. Because if you do, what happens if you lose your job? What happens if you get sick and can no longer work? Sure, unemployment may carry you for a little while. But, believe me, I’ve collected unemployment myself, and it will barely (if even) cover your living expenses. And the coverage does not last forever.

Have I scared you a little? Good! In my life, I’ve known far too many people who’ve relied on just their job earnings to cover their expenses month to month. Eventually, whether because of job loss, divorce, sickness, etc., they became so destitute that they could not even afford health insurance. And I’m not talking about people making $8/hour- some of these folks were earning over $200K/year!

So, what can you do to protect yourself, and your loved ones, from debt and financial ruin? And what, if anything, can you do if your sole source of income is only your current job? Alternatively, what if you are a student, retired, or are unemployed, and so not working at all?

First of all, don’t fret. On this site, I discuss many ways in which you can save and even make money, and all WITHOUT taking another job. Even if you have only 30 minutes each day, you can still better your financial situation and your life. The key to doing this is simply to let go of your old thoughts and habits. After all, it was your old thoughts and habits to got you to where you are today. So, why not chuck them and start over fresh?

At Your Money and Debt, my stance is this: if you think that you are doomed to being in debt and in financial ruin, to always just scraping by, then you are absolutely right. However, if you expect that you will one day be financially independent, then you are also right. Outlook makes all the difference in the world.

And riding the coat-tails of this outlook is action. At some point, you need to analyze and change your life. If you are not happy with your job, with yourself, with the fulfillment (or lack thereof) of your dreams, then you need to do something about this unhappiness. After all, you have but a short time on this earth. Do you really want to spend your years wallowing in misery? Or, do you want to rise up and  above the mundane, living up to your full potential? The choice is yours.
